Ebook About The ties between women can run as deep as the ocean--but so can the secrets. For 20 years, Kayla, Antoinette and Val have performed their own special summer ritual. Once a year, the old friends put aside their daily, separate lives to drink champagne, swap stories and swim naked under the Nantucket stars. But on one of those bonding nights, one of their trio swims out from the shore and doesn't return. After the surviving friends emerge from their grief, they realize that the repercussions of their loss go far beyond their little circle, and they begin to uncover layers of secrets--and their connections to each other--that were never revealed on the beach. What has made their friendship strong now has the power to destroy--their marriages, families, even themselves, in Elin Hilderbrand's Nantucket Nights.Book Nantucket Nights: A Novel Review :
I usually love Elin's books - have read so many of them. This one was awful. Storyline was so completely unbelieveable. First of all one thing I do have to ask (not that anyone will answer) is why are all of Elin's characters always getting SOOOO drunk? I get having a drink, I even get that once in a why one might have way too much but this seems to be a constant in all her stories. People drinking tremendous amounts all the time. But back to this book - awful story. Unbelievable in so many ways. My favorite character if there had to be one was poor Theo. The best part of the book was when Theo realized his mother was always there for him no matter what. Val I hated. She was a "friend"? And seriously toward the end Kayla gets "banished" to Puerto Rico for 6 weeks and is not allowed to call family except to say she arrived safely. So totally ridiculous in every way. As a mother, nobody is going to banish me for 6 weeks from my children no matter what precipitated this and tell me I am not allowed to call them for 6 weeks - you must be kidding me. The worst of Elin's books - I have kept all the others I bought to read again - I will never read this one again. I'm a huge Hilderbrand fan. This book hooked me in with the mystery that's laid out in the first few chapters (Kindle sample) and the relationships of the 3 women. But it did not rate above 3 for me for several reasons. The main character is too insecure, self-centered and whiney. I know we all have insecurities, but she was over the top to the point I couldn't relate. The Black friend was painted as this "mysterious other" who no one really understood. Her character was not well fleshed out and was only portrayed in her relation to the white characters. I felt it was a bit offensive, although I'm sure not intentionally so.The white friend, Val, was also not well fleshed out and was completely unlikeable. The husband, Raoul, and the son Theo were the two characters I related to most. In fact, the son Theo's side of the story was what kept me going for much of it. I was really moved by the portrayal of a teen in love. The end of this book seemed to come up suddenly and wasn't satisfying. Felt rushed - I literally imagined Hilderbrand was writing, the doorbell rang and she had to finish it fast because she had a dinner date or something. Most of all, I did not care for the type of female friendships portrayed in this book - shallow and back-stabbing and secretive. As we all know, that's not the reality of most female friendships (nor is it in most of Hilderbrand's work). Perhaps this story was meant to show that if you are shallow, self-involved and insecure, your relationships will bear that fruit?Overall, one of my least favorites of hers.
